KSLA is pleased to announce that Susan Matherly, System Director of McDowell Place of Danville, has been appointed to the KSLA Board of Directors as Board Secretary. Susan replaces Polly West, who resigned her board seat in late 2018 upon her career move out of senior living and into a hospital setting.

Susan has been involved with KSLA from the beginning and is a past president of the Board of Directors. She brings a wealth of knowledge concerning assisted living regulations and helped pass the legislation for assisted living in 2010.

Welcome Susan!

In a recent article written by Paul Davidson, USA Today, Mr. Davidson says that, "Faced with a wave of Baby Boomer retirements and a worsening labor shortage, many employers are trying to hold on to their older workers, persuade some to return after retirement and even recruit those retired from other companies."

Baby Boomers opting to NOT retire? Why?

Studies show that many are retiring in droves, to the tune of about 10,000 a day. But of the ones who aren't, many say they're just not ready to stop working. People are living longer, which means that with dwindling pensions they need to fund a larger nest egg. Also, they're healthier and better educated than their predecessors, and many are just plain bored in retirement.

AARP Vice President Susan Weinstock says older workers bring soft skills “gained over a lifetime of work, like calm under the pressure, ability to solve complex problems, ability to listen and be empathetic. These are uniquely human skills that a computer or a robot can’t replace.”
