We are saddened to share that Kevin Hansen, Associate Representative on the KSLA Board of Directors, passed away on Sunday, March 6.
Anyone who knew Kevin, knew he was an extremely kind and compassionate person with a passion for many things including family, education, his students, and softball. His vast knowledge of the senior living landscape and his efforts to educate future leaders in the senior living industry will be missed by so many.
We will miss our conversations with Kevin, the knowledge and experience that he shared in service to the KSLA members, his leadership on the KSLA Education and Conference Planning Committee, his wit, charm and enthusiasm for bettering the lives of aging adults in Kentucky. Rest in Peace Kevin - Godspeed.
Good news! SB-11 passed the House last Tuesday, unanimously, 96-0!
SB-11 was delivered to the governor last Wednesday. It awaits his signature which would pass the bill into law immediately. If for some strange reason the governor vetoes the bill, we will have the votes to override the veto.
Thank you all for your support in getting this very important bill to this point.
The Antimicrobial Drugs Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recommended emergency use authorization (EUA) of molnupiravir. The oral capsule medication made by Merck is designed to treat “mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at risk for progressing to severe COVID-19 and/or hospitalization,” says the FDA.
The recommendation next goes to the FDA for approval, which is expected. Some on the advisory committee voted against authorization because its effect on pregnant people is not known. Merck told the committee that while the drug had not been tested against the Omicron variant, they had “every expectation” it would work.
Argentum and the CDC recently shared the following information about the Omicron variant, which has been confirmed in several states including California, New Jersey, Missouri, and Pennsylvania.
The FDA issued a statement on its investigation and action on the Omicron variant. The statement includes links to updated information on use and limitations of monoclonal antibodies, fact sheets on variants and therapeutics, and testing and variants.
KSLA is upgrading its accounting system and we want you to know about some positive changes you can expect! We'll be moving to Quickbooks OnLine beginning January 1, 2022 and this means things are going to be easier for our members. Here's the scoop...
Beginning January 1, 2022, you'll have the option to receive invoices from KSLA via email. To insure that you receive them without delay, please add quickbooks@notification.intuit.com to your "safe senders" list in your email application. And, so you know what you're looking for, invoices will come to your inbox with a subject line that reads something like Invoice 12345 from Kentucky Senior Living Association (KSLA). When you receive electronic invoices via email from KSLA ...
If any of your contact information has changed, please email those changes to Rebecca@KentuckySeniorLiving.org. Generally speaking, electronic invoices for provider members will be emailed to the Executive Director, Administrator and/or Owner of each community and our associate members' invoices will be emailed to our main point of contact at each business. However, if you'd like us to send those electronic invoices to another person, or if you prefer that we only mail you hard copy invoices via USPS, that's ok too! Just let us know that by emailing Rebecca@KentuckySeniorLiving.org and we'll flag your account accordingly.
Because this is a new process, we'll email annual membership dues invoices to each KSLA member on January 1, 2022, AND we'll also mail a hard copy of each invoice to our members via USPS mail.
We appreciate your patience during this transition. If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know!
One of the benefits of KSLA membership is the opportunity to serve on committees that pertain to the senior living industry. There are several committees to choose from and a brief description of each is below.
Finance Committee (Maximum of Five Committee Members)
The Finance Committee provides financial analysis, advice and oversight of the KSLA budget. Their sole responsibility is to ensure the Association is operating with the financial resources it needs to provide programs and services to the membership. This committee typically meets quarterly, either in person or virtually and is chaired by the KSLA Treasurer.
Public Policy and Advocacy Committee
The Public Policy and Advocacy Committee’s purpose is to advise and make recommendations to the KSLA Board of Directors on public policy goals and advocacy actions, as well as helping keep the Board of Directors informed of legislative and regulatory developments.
Education and Conference Committee
The Education and Conference Committee assists the KSLA staff in determining the topic preferences and number of free-standing workshops to be conducted during each calendar year. Committee members also assist in determining the keynote speaker and breakout session topics and presenters for the annual conference. During the annual conference, members of the Education and Conference Committee act as facilitators of the breakout sessions and assist with conference general sessions. This committee typically meets 2-3 times per year, either in person or virtually, and has some small responsibilities during the annual Conference.
Nominating Committee (Maximum of Three Committee Members)
The Nominating Committee shall work with the KSLA staff to prepare a slate of Provider member nominees for election to the KSLA Board of Directors. Each member of the nominating committee shall be a Provider member representative not related by ownership or management to any other member of the Nominating Committee. The slate of candidates shall be disseminated by mail, facsimile or other electronic means to Provider members not less than 15 days before the annual membership meeting. This committee will oversee the voting process during the annual Conference, will tally the votes, and announce those elected to the Board of Directors. This committee works with the KSLA staff in the weeks prior to the annual Conference, typically via electronic communications, and has responsibilities during the membership meeting at the annual Conference.
KALPAC Committee
The KALPAC Committee shall oversee fundraising events to keep the KALPAC funds replenished. Committee members shall help in determining which elected legislators should receive funds from KALPAC. Each Committee member shall demonstrate interest in government affairs and the political process and an ability to act in a bipartisan manner. This committee works with the KSLA staff virtually to coordinate disbursements to legislators and is responsible for fundraising efforts, which are minimal, at the annual Conference.
If you're interested in serving on one of these committees, please let us know by clicking Here and completing a short form. If you have questions, please contact Rebecca Pfalzgraf at Rebecca@KentuckySeniorLiving.
Argentum has officially launched its provider relief and workforce development campaign and they’re requesting immediate participation from KSLA (and our members) in the following very simple ways.
First: Read this letter to President Biden, sent by James Balda, President and CEO of Argentum. The letter stresses the dire need for the following in senior living communities:
Next: Urge your staff, residents, and their families to visit www.standingwithseniors.com and send a letter to President Biden and members of Congress. On that page, there are two blue buttons. Click on these buttons to access a very easy tool that can be used to send a pre-written message (which can also be customized but doesn’t have to be) to President Biden and members of Congress. Using the pre-written messages, it takes less than a minute - all you have to do is input your address. This really is a super-fast and simple way to be heard on issues related to the COVID-19 impact on your business, your staff, your residents, and their families.
And finally, KSLA ordered yard signs and banners for those members who requested them last week. Once we receive them, we'll hand-deliver them to nearby counties and ship the rest.
This important campaign will only be successful with the participation of all our members, as well as members of associations all around the country.
We truly appreciate your support!
Each year, Louisville Business First announces it's list of "Fast 50" companies, which ranks private companies in the Louisville area by revenue growth over a period of time. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, three KSLA Associate members and one KSLA Provider member persevered and had some of their best years ever.
Each company is independent, for-profit, and privately held and must disclose three years of financial documentation to be considered for the list of "Fast 50" companies in our area. The 50 companies with the highest percentage of revenue growth from 2018-2020 made the "Fast 50" list. Among those 50 are these four KSLA members:
#7 Schaefer General Contracting: Eric Schaefer, Senior Vice President, made the list, reporting a whopping 134.3% revenue growth
#14 Arcadia Communities, LLC: Brian Durbin, President (and KSLA At-Large Board of Director) reported a 79.6% revenue growth
#17 Miranda Construction: Ryan Miranda, President, made the list, reporting 66.7% revenue growth
#27 Jacobs Group, Inc.: Scott Jacobs, President, reported a 39.4% revenue growth.
Congratulations!
