AARP Joins With Nonprofit to Teach Tech to Older Adults

AARP is working with Senior Planet and its parent nonprofit organization, Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), to offer FREE technology education courses to older adults across the United States.

Senior Planet programs are devised to teach adults 60+ basic computer skills as well as more advanced options. There are multiple class offerings each week including:

  • "Morning Stretch", Tai Chi and Chair Yoga
  • Cloud Storage - Learn how to store documents, images, and other files remotely, while protecting your important data.
  • MyChart - Come learn about this electronic health-record portal that works both in a web browser and app.
  • Getting Started on Zoom - Come to this hands-on workshop and sign up for a free, basic Zoom account.
  • How to Spot Fake News - This lecture will provide a helpful explanation of the term "fake news" and give you some tools to evaluate news sources
  • And many others!

One instructor noted that many participants login early and remain on-line after the class concludes so they can talk to new friends they've met through the program - whether they're close by or from across the country.

For Older Adults, Specific Facebook Activities More Important Than Overall Use

study in Health Communication determined that older adults experienced different levels of competence, relatedness, and autonomy on Facebook based on the types of their activities on the website, reports EurekAlert. Seniors who posted more pictures to Facebook felt more competent, which boosted their well-being in general. Monoclonal Antibody Treatments to Impede COVID-19 Progression & Prevent Hospitalizations

Monoclonal antibody (mAb) treatments were authorized by the FDA for emergency use in November 2020. When administered early in the course of infection, these outpatient infusions can impede disease progression and prevent hospitalizations.

Recently, the HHS’ Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response established a program called SPEED (Special Projects for Equitable and Efficient Distribution) to provide mAbs directly to pharmacies serving long-term care communities. However, even with ready access to mAbs, many communities are unable to administer these potentially life-saving treatments due to staffing shortages and overwhelming clinical demands.

Communities experiencing a COVID-19 outbreak can contact the National Home Infusion Association (NHIA) to identify infusion providers who can access and administer Bamlanivimab mAb therapy through a pilot program that addresses reimbursement and other potential obstacles to treatment.

Friends of Wii Bowling and Senior Leaders Wanting Our Seniors to Have Fun Again!

Friends of Wii Bowling and Senior Leaders Wanting Our Seniors to Have Fun Again!

(From Dennis Berkholtz, Founder of National Senior League, LLC) The National Senior League (NSL) will be managing its 11th season of Senior Wii Bowling Championships starting the week of Feb 15. Registration is now open on the NSL website at www.nslgames.com or by calling (435) 714-9491. Information is on the NSL website. Given the many accolades of last season, I hope you'll try to participate in this seasons championships. We had many coaches tell us how thankful they and their Wii bowlers were last season for having the opportunity to do something fun in spite of COVID.

Wii bowlers can easily keep their 6' distancing and wear masks as they bowl. The bowlers love to bowl - they only need the opportunity from leaders in their communities to do so.

Thanks for your past support. Hope you will continue to support seniors as we bowl through COVID.

Assisted Living Communities to Utilize COVID-19 Detecting Dogs

(Clay Neely, December 30, 2020) Five senior living communities in Atlanta, Georgia are receiving partner dogs because of their uncanny ability to recognize the scents of COVID-19 and, hopefully, other common health concerns in community residents.

Dogs in training now are able to identify the COVID-19 virus via sterile swabs used to collect sweat samples from test subjects. According to the article, these trials are expected to be complete, and dogs placed in facilities, in early 2021.
